JSC Jasyl Damu presented the results of the inventory of persistent organic pollutants

JSC Jasyl Damu, together with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan and its international partner RECETOX (Brno, Czech Republic), held the second validation meeting in Astana on the results of the inventory of persistent organic pollutants. The event was part of a large international project of the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Environment Programme, aimed at updating Kazakhstan’s National Implementation Plan under the Stockholm Convention.

The National Implementation Plan is the country’s strategic document in the field of ecology. Updating the plan will allow Kazakhstan to effectively address modern environmental challenges and fulfill its international obligations.

The meeting brought together representatives of Jasyl Damu JSC, government agencies, the Regional Centre of the Stockholm Convention RECETOX, international experts, environmentalists, business, and public organizations.

“Work on updating the National Implementation Plan is of strategic importance for Kazakhstan. We are not only fulfilling international commitments but also laying the foundation for a future where people’s health and a clean environment are reliably protected,” said Deputy Chairman of the Board of Jasyl Damu JSC, N.K. Kabdoldanov.

The meeting presented the results of large-scale work on the inventory of both old and new persistent organic pollutants. Today, the Stockholm Convention list includes 34 substances, and this year it was expanded by three more. Particular attention of experts was focused on polychlorinated biphenyls and pesticides.

The participants discussed Kazakhstan’s fulfillment of its obligations under the Stockholm Convention. The main requirement is to phase out all active equipment containing persistent organic pollutants by 2025 and ensure their complete destruction by 2028.

Particular concern is caused by new industrial pollutants that are widely used in everyday life. They can be found in electronics, furniture, textiles, children’s products, and even disposable tableware. Such widespread presence makes the problem global and directly affects the health of millions of people.

The updated National Implementation Plan of Kazakhstan will include measures to reduce the impact of persistent organic pollutants on public health and the environment. Its implementation will strengthen international cooperation and ensure reliable protection for future generations.

Kazakhstan is confidently moving toward creating a safe ecological environment and making a significant contribution to addressing one of the most important global challenges of our time — the fight against hazardous chemical pollutants.
