JSC Zhasyl Damu, with the support of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan and its international partner — the Regional Centre of the Stockholm Convention RECETOX (Brno, Czech Republic) — held a final meeting to approve the updated National Implementation Plan (NIP) of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
The event was organized within the framework of a joint project of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) titled “Review and Update of National Implementation Plans under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Albania, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.”
The meeting was attended by Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Zhomart Aliyev, representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, international organizations including FAO, UNDP, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Kazakhstan, as well as the secretariats of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions.
The work on updating the National Plan was carried out throughout 2025. The National Inception Workshop took place on June 4, followed by a Validation Meeting on the Inventory Results on September 3. The final meeting was dedicated to the discussion and approval of the final version of the document, which outlines national priorities and measures for controlling the management of persistent organic pollutants.
The main goal of the event was to approve the updated National Implementation Plan, aimed at fulfilling Kazakhstan’s international obligations under the Stockholm Convention, improving the mechanisms for regulating and monitoring the management of persistent organic pollutants, and reducing their negative impact on public health and the environment.
The adoption of the updated National Plan contributes to strengthening the national system for chemical and waste management, enhancing environmental safety, and promoting Kazakhstan’s international cooperation in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development.
